Burr: Tony’s class

WITH leading scorer Jamille Matt courting glances from the Football League, Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr is proving to have a keen eye for talent.

The Aggborough boss saw potential in the striker when he snapped him up from Sutton Coldfield Town last January and is now reaping the rewards as Harriers challenge for the Blue Square Bet Premier play-offs.

It could be a similar story with fellow goal-getter Anthony Malbon after Harriers paid an initial £7,000 last week to take him from Northern League Division One South mid-table outfit Newcastle Town, the same level as Sutton Coldfield.

Another example is goalkeeper Tony Breeden who is fast proving his worth since joining from Leamington, of the Southern League Premier Division, last November.

Brought in to bolster the ranks after a long-term knee injury to Danny Lewis, Breeden has made 12 starts and is set to continue between the posts for tomorrow’s trip to Stockport County which is subject to a 9.30am pitch inspection.

Burr is delighted with his progress, and said: “Tony’s been excellent for us since he’s come in and just gets on with it. He’s a strange character and we love him to bits – he’s a typical goalkeeper and you can’t get any sense out of him at times.

“Again, he is a lad from a lower level who is showing a lot of people you can make the step up and he has certainly done that.”
