Man told to leave pub was abusive to police

4:30pm Tuesday 12th April 2011

A MAN made threats against a police officer’s family and urinated on a cell door after being kicked out of a pub, a court was told Maurice O’Connor pleaded guilty to using threatening words to cause harassment, alarm or distress and assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court.

Matt Dodson, prosecuting, said O’Connor and his partner were drinking at the Honey Bee pub in Droitwich on Thursday, March 24, when the manager noticed that the defendant was becoming more and more drunk.

The manager called a taxi for the 30-year-old, who became aggressive when staff refused to serve him any more alcohol.

He began shouting and swearing, nudging the manager with his elbow when she came around from the other side of the bar.

She told O’Connor to leave, but he refused and she called the police. He then threw an empty glass when the manager tried to remove it.

O’Connor’s girlfriend persuaded him to leave the pub and officers arrived a short time later.

O’Connor threatened officers with violence, saying it would take more than two of them to arrest him, and began swearing.

He was pinned against a police vehicle, arrested and placed in the back. He began kicking against the window, at which point he was removed from the vehicle and put on the floor while officers waited for a police van to arrive.

O’Connor made more threats against the officers and threatened sexual acts against an officer’s wife and children.

When he arrived at the station, he exposed himself to police and urinated on the cell door. Later on, an officer passed him a cup of hot coffee through the hatch in the cell which O’Connor threw at him, hitting him in the chest and arms.

The officer’s left forearm was still red and inflamed when writing a report some four hours later.

District judge Bruce Morgan described O’Connor’s behaviour as “appalling” and said he used “disgusting language”.

“It’s some of the worst I’ve heard for a long period of time,” he said.

Mr Morgan adjourned the proceedings for a pre-sentence report.

O’Connor, of The Caravan, Comhampton, Stourport-on-Severn, was bailed to re-appear in court on Thursday, May 5, on condition he does not enter any on-licensed premises.
